Resources

This page lists online resources that cover a range of topics useful to budget-minded businesses. Each link has been visited and almost every product and service tested. A number of resources have been excluded because:

  • They require too much personal information from you.
  • They offer only enough information to get you to buy their service but not enough to be useful.
  • They bombard their visitors with pop-ups and/or their ads appear more prominent than content.

Links appear here based upon the hands-on experience of Tim Slavin, the independent editor for this site. I do not accept money or quid pro quo for listings. I do welcome questions if you cannot find what you need here. This page is a work in progress so do come back as needed. Or point your RSS reader to one of these feeds: RSS 1.0, RSS 2.0, or Atom.

Most Recent Entries

  • Rounded Corners with CSS: http://www.html.it/articoli/niftycube/index.html
Nifty way to create rounded corners using only two parameters (one of which is optional) with CSS and Javascript. Includes a detailed discussion with examples.
  • WetPaint Wiki: http://www.wetpaint.com
This is a hosted wiki that makes it very easy to build online communities and participate. They provide templates and lots of ways to navigate information. They also provide links to interesting wikis maintained by other users, for example, a Lego wiki and a Joke wiki. This appears to be a free wiki.
  • digiShop: http://digishop.sumeffect.com
This is the cart I currently (2006) recommend to my clients. While no cart is perfect, the digiShop interface is easy to use and has a lot of features and flexibility. And while they have templates you have to change, it's only four compared to many more with other carts. And they provide an online widget that takes your page design, adds their code, and generates the templates. Their pre and post sale support is excellent and thorough. After 90 days, you have to pay for support but that should not be a problem for most users. Both the cart and support are reasonable, below $1,000 USD.
  • SpamCheck: http://spamcheck.sitesell.com/
Free resource that evaluates your email to determine how likely it is to be tagged as spam AND offers ideas to reduce your score. One caution: if your email delivery service is blacklisted with SpamHaus and other services, that will prevent your perfect un-spammy email from being delivered. Thanks to Emi at Nash Interactive for the link.
  • FileInfo.net: http://www.fileinfo.net/
FileInfo.net contains a searchable database of file extensions with detailed explanations of each file type. Every entry contains information about the file format, a description of the file, and how to open the file. Programs for opening the files are listed for both the Macintosh and Windows platforms. One thousand entries make this a comprehensive resource from a reader, Per Christensson, who runs another neat site about computers, Sharpened.net.
