What's It Gonna Cost To Get Your Emails Into AOL (and perhaps Yahoo soon)?

Posted by TimSlavin at February 4, 2006

"Over the coming months, AOL may phase out their enhanced whitelist service and replace it with a taxation model that will bill YOU a fraction of a cent per email delivered to their subscribers.

This means delivering to AOL will drastically raise email delivery costs...for many, the cost will exceed a multiple of what it already costs to deliver the entire mailing. Will AOL's subscribers stand for it? Will you end up paying for it? Let's find out together..."

An excellent article, being updated as the story evolves, from E-zine Tips.

Bottomline, a gated internet is a dead internet. If small businesses have to pay to send email to prospects and customers who use AOL email addresses, either they'll stop because of the cost or their recipients will dump AOL. Indeed, if AOL follows through, asking people who sign up for your newsletter or product offers to not use AOL is a likely option.
