Spam carries viruses in the form of attachments, invades discussion boards and chat rooms, and takes over blogs. Phishing scams—many run by the Russian mafia—has cost unsuspecting users $1.8 million."

TechSoup, an online site and community towards helping non-profit groups use the internet, has a nice set of articles about spam, how to prevent spam, how to avoid being labelled as spam, and well just about everything about our favorite four letter word.
