An old article from 2003, on SitePoint, but the ideas are timeless. The article is written by Cameron Moll, a designer whose site is worth regular visits.
As a professional writer, the biggest secret I have is that I use models for every writing project. When I create something for a client, I never start in a totally original way. I start with a model. The client's needs and my interpretation of their needs add originality. But the foundation, the bones of what I write, are almost always a straight copy of a good model. The same applies to creating designs, as described in this article.
