CNET recently reviewed six applications (five of them free) that search your hard drive to find files and information you need. The one I've used for awhile, Copernic, oddly scores higher than the new Google tool. And another tool, blinkx, searches your RSS feeds as well. (In case you've been in a cave the past week, Google launched a beta version of its desktop search tool last week.)
There are privacy issues with these new tools, more unintended consequences than serious problems. PC World describes some of the privacy issues with the Google tool (the article includes reader comments that offer context). And eWeek says the privacy issues of these tools are overblown.
Bottomline, if you use web-based email on a public computer that has desktop search software (think your public library), chances are good your private email will be available to others. My hunch is that libraries, in particular, will figure this out and turn off a few switches in the search tool. Thanks to the Axandra Search Engine Facts email newsletter for collecting these links.
