HTML Entities

Posted by TimSlavin at September 25, 2004

This week proved quiet in terms of posting to the website. I found a few excellent items, including Pocket-Sized Design: Taking Your Website to the Small Screen, a topic with very little written about it.

Besides the two stories highlighted below, you also might want to look at Color Schemer, a neat software tool that helps you build color schemes that work. I'm using it to help me with the next design for this website. Basically, you start with one color then use a variety of tools to develop the other 3-5 colors you need for a color palette to use for background, titles, emphasis, highlights, links, and so on.

This week I also had to solve an obscure problem related to html entities. People know what entities are even if they don't know the word. The copyright symbol is an entity, for example, so is the trademark symbol. In this case, I had to find the html entity for a bullet. I had code from a client with bullets but they displayed as question marks in a web browser. Luckily, I remembered a websited called HTML Help and they have all possible html entitites listed. Instead of question marks, I was able to guarantee bullets would appear in every browser.

I did buy pMachine to replace the publishing technology used to publish this site. Among many other things, pMachine lets you define all the fields used to publish, not just the typical headline, excerpt, body, and keyword fields offered by weblog publishing tools. However, I will have to write a URL redirection script because pMachine has an obstinate URL scheme. That's the only flaw I can find in their technology.

Thanks again for your visits and for reading. I hope to have time this weekend to at least put pMachine in place by Monday morning, then switch to the new page design. We'll see!

Tim
