"Mr Gates made a point of dwelling on blogs and said that although they started in the technical community and have come to be a broader social phenomenon, businesses can use them too.
They had advantages over more traditional ways of keeping in touch such as e-mail and websites, he said."
While his insights are obvious, it is helpful to have someone like Gates to show businesses what can be done. The main problem to solve with businesses and weblogs is creating and maintaining an honest voice that readers will trust. Microsoft apparently has 700 employee bloggers. But I suspect most companies will find their legal and PR teams demand control over what gets published. That's the kiss of death for creating an honest voice that readers will trust and appreciate over time. It'll be like reading marketing brochures one paragraph at a time.
