Six Steps to Better Interviews and Simplified Task Analysis

adaptive path has an excellent essay from one of their partners, Indi Young, about how to manage interviews about work processes. My only comment is that one of the points, "Ask Why," should actually be "Ask What." My experience is that asking why can make people defensive or give you the party line. Asking "what" often makes people think in a neutral way about their processes and motives. I learned this trick years ago at a journalism seminar taught by Flora Lewis of the New York Times.
