The Cost Of Information

Posted by TimSlavin at February 20, 2004

Welcome back. Thanks for visiting and reading. This week, as part of costing out a project for a client, I realized that publishing this website "costs" me about 15 hours a week, on average, which translates into $1200 USD. That's about $57,000 USD per year with four weeks off. That shocked me. I got into publishing this website partly because I sit here at my desk working for clients and like to take online detours from time to time, researching things, finding amusement. Time apparently does add up.

I started this week almost by accident looking at remote website activity tracking. From a past visit to Pixel Decor, a fun design site, I remembered her site had links to at least two vendors I wanted to check out, Bravenet and NedStat. The latter is a UK outfit that offers free and paid website activity tracking while Bravenet offers the same plus a lot of other capabilities. I also blogged OneStat, another service that looks the best, but only hooked up NedStat and Bravenet for now. After a week, my verdict: I still like SiteMeter best for its breadth of detail.

This week also had a few basic research items: US Rural Areas and the Internet, Majority of Older Americans Prefer to Send E-Mail Instead of Handwritten Letters or Postcards, and Study: E-Newsletter Readers Spot Spam Better. And I found what appears to be a free, community-developed software tool from Microsoft, ASP.Net Web Matrix Application Development Tool. The funniest line, a Democrat from Kentucky who raised $80,000 USD by spending $2,000 USD to advertise on political weblogs. When asked what a weblog was, he responded, "It's that thing that brings in money." (Blogs Pump Bucks Into Campaigns).

Finally, another site I rediscovered this week is Despair.com which is far more fun than it sounds. They publish posters that mock the serious posters many corporations put up to motivate their employees. Some of my favorite posters are Mistake (tagline: It Could Be That The Purpose Of Your Life Is Only To Serve As A Warning To Others) and Ambition (tagline: "The Journey Of A Thousand Miles Sometimes Ends Very, Very Badly).

Hope you all had a great week. Let me know if there is anything that I can do for you.

Tim
