eMarketer has a good but pricey research report ($695) with a bit of useful free data used to sell the report.
For example, they report there are 5,902.574 small businesses in the US (5,285,175 have 2-19 employees, 529,668 have 20-99 employees, and 87,732 have 100-499 employees). The 100-499 employee businesses have 99% internet penetration on site, 54% have websites, and 32% have hosted websites. The 20-99 employee businesses have 93% internet penetration on site, 47% have websites, and 33% have hosted websites. The 2-19 employee businesses have 80% internet penetration, 28% have websites, and 24% havehosted websites.
The also cite a Verizon report from late 2002 that nearly 70% of small business with less than 50 employees do not have a websites, a number unchanged from 1999. eMarketer cites another study from mid-2002 that of all businesses with less than 250 employees, 11% had spent up to $10,000 to design their websites and $500 or more per month to maintain them. The Verizon report cited also shows 42% of their respondents said their website had met or exceeded their expectations.
