"By granting Nortel an exclusive 18-month deal to supply the equipment that sends phone calls as digital data like that used over the Internet, Verizon, the nation's biggest phone company, had given a huge lift to a technology that some industry executives say could be the most important development in public telecommunications networks since analog switches made way for digital equipment two decades ago." Good overview article on how one big phone company, Verizon, is moving to take advantage of the internet telephone opportunity. Skype and similar tools allow individuals to use the internet as a telephone but to reach mass market acceptance, companies like Verizon have to step up, build the capacity, and negotiate with government regulators.
