FBI bypasses First Amendment to nail a hacker

Posted by TimSlavin at September 30, 2003

"Citing a provision of the Patriot Act, the FBI is sending letters to journalists telling them to secretly prepare to turn over their notes, e-mails and sources to the bureau." This story is amazing and scary, to say the least. Even the letter from the FBI to journalists was supposed to be kept secret from the journalists' editors, lawyers, and anyone else. Journalists have protections to ensure the free flow of information within a society. This also impacts anyone who uses the internet (where your every movement leaves a trace) since the case involved has nothing to do with terrorism. Article is written by a former head of the U.S. Justice Department's computer crime unit. From The Register. Found through Dan Gillmor's eJournal.
