Imagine a weird guinea pig, but huge . . .: "Scientists have found fossils of what they say is the largest rodent that ever lived, a 9-foot long, buffalo-sized creature with a long tail and powerful teeth that foraged along the riverbanks of Venezuela about 6 million to 8 million years ago." Sorry, could not resist. Scientific American has a colored illustration of the beast. Science has the same illustration but (appropriately) even bigger. And you can find out all about its eating habits and natural predators in a Salon article.
