Is email dead, and will RSS replace it?: "Is email losing its effectiveness for publishers? That's what a chorus of journalists are saying, including the San Jose Mercury News' Dan Gillmor and E&P's Steve Outing. Both have written extensively about the troubles with email newsletters: spam filters blocking legitimate opt-in messages; worms and viruses; and simple email overload." Good summary of recent articles on the topic, from the Online Publisher's Association. I buy the "email is dead" argument for newsletters with huge anonymous lists. However, newsletters sent intermittently by small and medium sized businesses who know their customers should have much less of a problem with poor open rates, spam complaints, spam blocking, and related issues. Email isn't dead: it is losing its mass media effectiveness. Email works fine for businesses who know the customers and prospects on their email list.
