NYTimes.com News Alert Has 20,000 Subs: "Only a few months after becoming a pay service, the News Tracker service at NYTimes.com now has 20,000 subscribers." From 500,000 subs, an amazing drop. Short item published in Editor & Publisher. Found at Up2Speed which noted that in three years people will be used to paying for content. However, there are proven alternatives to straight to pay from free. The Times could have added ads to its free version and charged for an ad-free version with additional premium content. That probably would have retained most of their free subs, garnered at least slightly more paying subs, and mitigated some of their costs with ad revenues. Noted computer columnist Fred Langa uses this approach; surely the Times could have done better.
