On the Web, Without Wasting Time

Posted by TimSlavin at May 6, 2003

On the Web, Without Wasting Time: "At Mr. Lethers's company, which is called Patio Pacific, America's Finest Pet Doors (petdoors.com), he and his nine employees must first look after receiving supplies, taking orders and manufacturing and shipping its products. Working on the Web site is another task to be squeezed in. "We little guys have a hard time devoting the resources we need to do it," Mr. Lethers said. Still, he said, having a Web site is worth the trouble. Sales of his pet doors — the kind that fit into sliding glass doors — have increased twofold since he went online." From NYTimes.com (free registration required; content available free for weeks only). Decent article on low cost ways for small businesses to do ecommerce online. However, they ignore open source tools for shopping carts, stress solutions that often subject businesses to displaying ads they cannot control (Yahoo!, for example), and quote an expert I've found to be more concerned about recommending products that give them an affiliate fee. Technology is complex enough that conflicts of interest are important, for me, at least.
