Internet Littered With Dead Web Sites

“Despite the Internet’s ability to deliver information quickly and frequently, the World Wide Web is littered with deadwood – sites abandoned and woefully out of date.” A call to update your website, please. Interesting data. From SiliconValley.com.

Comments About “Internet Littered With Dead Web Sites”

It would be nice if search engines would gradually retire these sites from their indexes– it’s annoying to wade through the out-of-date sites to get to information desired.

It is irresponsible for site owners (especially business sites) to provide out of date information, or to structure their site in such a way it doesn’t clearly identify the timeliness information.

Google’s advance search [ http://www.google.com/advanced_search?hl=en ] lets you see only sites that have updated in a certain period (i.e. last 3 months, …), but it’s not a convenient feature to use. Plus, I don’t think it actually works because page modification dates (from HTTP header) can be older than the date range selected, but the files still rank higher than items updated recently.

I’d wonder how much fodder is created by all these dead sites and if there is a way to get your own site to rise above them. In my own niche, I run across lots of old university information when searching for my own site. Are there any tools that can survey a series of sites to return their HTTP Last-Modified dates?
